Confirmation

Confirmation

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30)

About Confirmation

Confirmation is the sacrament that completes the grace of Baptism. Through it the baptized receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit, strengthening them to live their faith and share it with others. From the earliest days of the Church, the Apostles laid hands on the baptized so that they might receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit given at Pentecost.

In Confirmation the bishop, or a priest with the proper faculty, lays hands upon the candidate and anoints the forehead with sacred chrism, saying: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” Through this sacrament the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.

Confirmation deepens our life as children of God, unites us more firmly to Christ, increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit within us, and strengthens our bond with the Church. It gives the grace to spread and defend the faith by word and action and to live as faithful witnesses of Christ.

Like Baptism, Confirmation imprints a spiritual mark or “seal” upon the soul and can be received only once. Strengthened by the Holy Spirit, the confirmed are called to live their faith boldly and participate fully in the life and mission of the Church.
