    Confession: A Short Guide

    How to Go

    1. Prepare (Examination of Conscience). Spend some time in prayer asking the Holy Spirit to help you remember your sins.
    2. Enter and begin. You can choose to confess by either kneeling behind the privacy screen or by sitting in the chair next to the priest. Make the Sign of the Cross and say: “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.” If you can remember, state how long it has been since your last confession.
    3. Confess your sins. Confess mortal sins in kind and number; include serious venial sins you wish to confess.
    4. Receive counsel and a penance. The priest may offer you spiritual guidance and will assign a penance.
    5. Pray an Act of Contrition. The Act of Contrition is posted in the confessional:
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins because of your just punishments, but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen.
    6. Absolution. The priest extends his hand and prays the words of absolution. Make the Sign of the Cross and respond, “Amen.”
    7. Complete your penance. As soon as possible. Feel free to enter one of the pews to pray, do penance and thank God for His infinite love and mercy.

Forgot a mortal sin? Mention it at your next Confession; you are still forgiven of sins you forgot unintentionally.

Haven’t been in years? Welcome back. Tell the priest, it is okay to ask for help.

    Quick Questions

What time should I arrive for Mass?
Arriving a few minutes early is best so you can find a seat and prepare prayerfully.
    How long is Mass?
About 60 minutes (longer on major feasts).
    Is there a dress code?
We ask everyone to dress in a way that reflects the reverence of being in the presence of God.
    What about kids?
Children are always welcome at Mass.
How often should I go to Confession?
One of the five precepts of the Catholic Church is that “you shall confess your sins at least once per year.” More often than this is encouraged, so please frequent the sacrament as much as needed.
Do I need to be Catholic to attend Mass?
Everyone is welcome to attend Mass, though only practicing Catholics in full communion with the Church can receive the Eucharist.
Can I receive the Eucharist if I am not Catholic?
The Eucharist is reserved for Catholics in full communion with the Church. Visitors are encouraged to attend Mass and may come forward with arms crossed to receive a blessing.
Are Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation required for Catholics?
Catholics are obliged to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. Deliberately missing Mass without a serious reason is considered a grave matter. If a serious matter prevents attendance (such as illness, caring for children or the sick, lack of access) one is excused from the obligation.
